CBGB Festival Rocks New York October 9-13
The doors may have closed on the famous punk and new wave club CBGB, but the name and rock ethos lives on in its namesake festival. Now in its second year, the CBGB Music and Film Festival will take place October 9 to 13, and feature over 500 artists, 125 speakers, and 100 movies.
Events really kick off on Tuesday, when CBGB: The Movie gets its cinematic debut at Landmark Sunshine Cinema. Exploring the roots of the punk movement, this film is loaded with some of today’s biggest stars playing the music of rock and punk luminaries. Alan Rickman leads the picture as the late CBGB owner Hilly Kristal, and he is supported by names like Malin Akerman as Debbie Harry of Blondie, Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters as Iggy Pop, and Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome of Dead Boys.
On the music side, the festival has something for everyone. Fans can catch acts from diverse musicians including Atlas Genius, Bass Drum of Death, Bell X1, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Jesse Malin, and Meat Puppets. Events range from regular concerts to the carefully curated, put together specifically by top industry insiders.
The main event will be on the 12th, when CBGB has the opportunity to create one of the biggest outdoor concerts in New York history. Stretching up Broadway from Times Square, this festival within a festival will feature performances by My Morning Jacket, The Wallflowers, Grizzly Bear, Divine Fits, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem (DJ set), and more. In addition to musicians and DJs, other attractions will include a record fair, a skateboard half-pipe, a music equipment expo, and even rock climbing.
We’ll be on the scene for some of these great events, and you should be too. Check out www.cbgb.com for all the latest on the festival’s schedule and how to obtain tickets.
