Black Moth Super Rainbow: Psychic Love Damage

If you want to know how strange Black Moth Super Rainbow is, the band’s name is a pretty clear indication. Rather than occupy a single genre, they gleefully combine different sounds to create a distinct, memorable mix.

Many of the vocals on the Psychic Love Damage EP are distorted, making the lyrics difficult to pick out. Any connection made with the material is through the sound rather than identifying with the words. Whether you’ll enjoy the EP depends upon your tolerance for psychedelic rock and electro colliding with these heavily distorted vocals.

For me, this works most of the time. The simple Southern rock sound of “The Wettest Day” is violated in all the right ways by the clever beat and spooky vocals. The duet of “Quiver the Good Times” is subtle, but sensuous, and the instrumental “Weird Winds” is a perfect send-off.  The weaknesses of this recording are apparent as there is really no hook here, and it is no wonder that frontman Tobacco decided to scrap this EP.

About Casey Hicks

Casey Hicks toils her daylight hours away in an office high above Manhattan in order to afford nights of passionately scribbling. The first song she remembers ever hearing is "Lola" by the Kinks. She thinks this explains a lot.
