Save Yourself, the new release from producer SBTRKT, is an electro-R&B, emo escapade that authentically and impressively switches up synthesizers and beats. It features an impressive group of vocalists that allow this eight-song masterpiece to shine with a vibrant resilience. The push and pull of the moody sonic background on “TBD” hooks to something inside your soul and eventually does you in with murky and elegant vocals from Sampha. “I Feel Your Pain” immediately kicks off with a jittery, spastic beckoning, both lyrically and instrumentally. D.R.A.M.’s lyrics move through like words flying furiously off the page from a nervous journal. By the time the silky vocals of Mabel arrive, the track hangs on with a luscious R&B feel. The dreamy haze of “Revert” features The-Dream while “Ready or Not” remains elegantly elusive and attractive, stripped-down, and playful. SBTRKT’s first release since 2014, Save Yourself is a very steady, solid, harmonious album that fails to get lost in bland repetition and prediction.
