Little Dragon’s 2014 album, Nabuma Rubberband, was nothing outside of genius. It was gloriously full of swirly beats and succulent melodies at the ever capable hands of this talented band from Sweden and the luscious vocal dynamics of lead singer Yukimi Nagano. It was even nominated for a Best Dance/Electronic Grammy. Edgy and delightful, searing synthesizers and bass, rattling beats with hypnotic tracks like “Klapp, Klapp” and the warning call of “Pretty Girls,” it offered up excellence in every sonic degree. A new remix album has emerged called Nabuma Purple Rubberband as the result of an Adult Swim collaboration project from OG Ron C and DJ Candlestick of the Chopstars. It’s screwed and chopped, which means that everything in the song operates at a dialed-back tempo that has been slowed way, way down and mostly renders the high energy and stylishly ambient excitement of the original album, a dreamy haze of what it once was. It uniquely offers two very different sides of one release. Like shards of sparkly stars, “Pretty Girls” takes on a moody, more somber feel while “Cat Rider” moves in like a softened, sexy slow rain. Listen to the album now at Adult Swim’s website.
