Mariachi and Maple Syrup, Celebrating @ Choice Streets, 5/5/2015
The Village Voice held their fourth annual Choice Streets on Cinco de Mayo this year, and, in celebratory fashion, New York City’s only all-female mariachi band, Mariachi Flor de Toloache, entertained the crowd with their lively music. During the event, attendees wear passport lanyards that get hole-punched with each tasting, while beer, wine, and spirits are unlimited. As far as cocktails go, New Amsterdam Vodka’s Amsterdam Mule was tasty as was the rum margarita Rums of Puerto Rico being served up.
The event has gained in popularity—lines were much longer this year, meaning future guests should go with a game plan in mind. The line was especially long for Gorilla Cheese NYC, a food truck specializing in grilled cheese sandwiches with dipping sauces like ginger and habanero and fillers like BBQ pulled pork and smoked turkey. Snowday, a food truck that serves maple syrup-themed foods and employs formerly incarcerated youths, was also serving a grilled cheese concoction (with maple syrup, of course). There wasn’t time to try everything, but the slice from Pizza Luca was delicious and the Asian-inspired taco from Domo Taco was super-tasty as well.
Hopefully the Voice will hold their Brooklyn Pour New York Craft Beer Festival again this fall, but in the meantime you can try your hand at an Amsterdam Mule with the recipe below.
Amsterdam Mule
Ingredients
2 oz. New Amsterdam Vodka
3 oz. ginger beer
½ oz. simple syrup
½ oz. fresh lime juice
Sprig of mint
Instructions:
Pour vodka over ice. Add simple syrup and lime juice. Top with ginger beer and stir. Spank mint sprig (to release aromas) and add as a garnish.
