Lisa Fischer with Grand Baton @ Jazz Standard, NYC 1/10/2015

Lisa FisherLisa Fischer, female backing vocalist with Sting and Chris Botti, one of the stellar stars of the Oscar winning documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom, Mick Jagger’s vocal foil at every Rolling Stones concert for a quarter of a century, hit Jazz Standard with trio Grand Baton last Saturday night.

Grand Baton-JC Maillard on guitars, Saz on Bass and vocal, Thierry Arpino on drums, Aidan Carroll on electric and upright bass and vocals-provided the perfectly sly, groove to the warmth of Ms. Fischer’s soulful originals and some wild renditions of well-known covers.

Softer tunes, like Amy Grant’s “Breath of Heaven” and Railroad Earth’s “Bird in a House” saw Lisa trilling into an echo mic on a stand as well as breathing deep, hard and strong into the mic she held. Carroll took up electric bass and Arpino began a wild back beat (that Lisa actually remarked with her big smile that she was having a hard time finding the ‘1’ on) as the band rolled into a reggae-plus version of “Rock And Roll.”

By now it was toasty and grooving in this super classy and comfortable jazz club on this cold New York night.

A just as inventive “Jumping Jack Flash” with JC Maillard cutting wild guitar grooves and singing like some chanting angel with Lisa, a fun “Addicted To Love” and a drag-your-heart through the fire “How Can I Ease the Pain,” came off without a hitch, running with the crowd’s attention and emotion. “How Can I Ease The Pain” is a Grammy Award winner and this sad aching love song just killed us all.

“Gimmie Shelter,” the ultimate Stones classic that Lisa has made her own live as much as Merry Clayton did on the recording, ended the show. This version didn’t rock hard but it grooved and Lisa provided less screams of the infamous “rape” and “murder” parts than she did just the warmest vocal flights and deep meaningful vocalizing, rolling the end of the tune to be about the power of love…which the crowd at Jazz Standard gave this humble beautiful woman with the stellar voice back in spades this night.
