Slow Magic @ Santos Party House, 9/25/14
Santos Party House is the multi-level club and venue owned by Andrew W.K. (who told me via Twitter that it is a “PARTY HOUSE HEAVEN”). His description isn’t too far off. The air in the dark room hung heavy with smoke from fog machines, with vibrant flashing lights cutting through the haze. The music was incredibly loud and seemed to get into the audience’s skin, no one could stop moving.
Kodak to Graph opened the night. Working off of programmed beats and samples, he got the crowd warmed up. The Florida based electronic artist had the music in his system, and danced very hard between adjusting controls on his board.
The crowd doubled in size between Kodak To Graph’s exit and Slow Magic‘s entrance. Screams erupted from the audience as soon as Slow Magic took the stage, donning his signature wolf mask that shimmers with neon light. He would trigger samples on his laptop at the start of a song, and spend the remainder pounding out the back beats on an elaborate drum pad. Its an interesting set up to witness because the emphasis is placed entirely on the drums, the melodic lines become secondary. The set was lively and a whole lot of fun.
